Your Guide to an Amazing Summer in San Diego

With summer right around the corner, San Diego is gearing up for another busy, event filled and exciting few months ahead! If you’re planning a family vacation, a weekend getaway with the guys or gals, a romantic escape or even if you’re a San Diego local – this summer has something for everyone. To help you plan your stay, we have compiled a list of events and happenings throughout the summer months. So, without further ado…here is your guide to an amazing summer in San Diego!

San Diego County Fair: Located on the grand grounds of Del Mar, the San Diego County Fair runs from June 3rd to July 4th. This event is truly for everyone. This year’s theme is “Mad About the Fair” and gives a nod to the Mad Hatter and Alice in Wonderland. According to the coordinators, “We will make the Fair into a grand-scale tea party featuring the renowned Lewis Carroll classic Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, fused with influences from steampunk, cosplay, great literature, whacky machinery, and all the fun and magic you have come to expect. Get ready for outlandish landscapes, crazy rides, unique foods, fabulous festivals and enthralling entertainment. Appearances by your favorite Wonderland characters and more will start your summer of “adventure and imagination.” With a huge array of food carts, games, rides, and shopping, you’ll have a jam packed day to enjoy. And the best way to end it? By attending one of the mainstage concerts the fair puts on. This year’s lineup includes Lady Antebellum, Switchfoot, Brian Wilson and Kenny Rogers. You’ll also have the option to enjoy a bluegrass festival or some great comedians in attendance. This fair is not to be missed!

Beach Concert with Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band : If you’re looking to celebrate Father’s Day in style and be a part of a good cause, head to Coronado Island for Gary Sinise  and his Lt. Dan’s Band (a nod to his character in the movie Forrest Gump) Beach Concert. Enjoy a BBQ, live music and drinks on the beach, with all donations going to the Gary Sinise Foundation, which supports our nation’s veterans.

San Diego Rock ‘N Roll Marathon: Running from June 3rd to 5th, this amazing San Diego summer marathon brings in more and more attendees with each passing year. If you’re looking to add a little exercise in with your summer fun, this is a great way to make it happen! All along the course, live bands are playing of you to celebrate your success as you continue along the course. There is also a massive healthy lifestyle trade show that you can explore if you want to stick to your health kick. The best part? No matter in what place you cross that finish line, you’re sure to feel like a winner when you’re partying to the sounds of  Marathon headliners as heavy as past players Pat Benatar, The Goo Goo Dolls, Brad Paisley and Macklemore. This event can definitely guide you to an amazing summer in San Diego!


Big Bay Boom 4th of July:  San Diego’s largest 4th of July fireworks show. This spectacle takes place across four different barges along the San Diego Bay. Though you can catch them on a couple  of different local San Diego news stations, the best way to experience these big booms is if you settle yourself in at one of six spots in the area; Shelter Island, Harbor Island, North Embarcadero, Marina District, Seaport Village and the Coronado Ferry Landing will be where you want to bring your lawn chairs, blankets and loved ones for this breathtaking display.

San Diego Pride Parade: This event takes place on July 16th, and is considered one of the largest Pride Parades in the country. San Diego’s Pride Parade draws crowds of over 100,000 joyous spectators and substantial media attention. The music festival that coincides with the parade rolls over the weekend, July 16th and 17th, and includes food trucks, drinks, exhibitors and an open air art gallery. Another added fun-fact about this event is that it raises money for multiple charitable organizations as a not-for-profit. This event is for everyone, as the executive director Stephen Whitburn states, “Welcome! Take joy in who you are, and celebrate each other. Pride is for everyone!”

Comic Con 2016: Need I say more? Comic Con International began back in 1970 as a ‘minicon’ at the US Grant Hotel in Downtown San Diego. This small, one day event eventually grew into the behemoth extravaganza it is today, with up to 130,000 attendees swarming the city to catch the latest news in the movie and comic world and meet their favorite science fiction and comic celebrities, actors, writers and creators. Though tickets can be hard to come by,  if you aren’t lucky enough to snatch them up in time, just heading downtown and exploring around the convention centre will give you a great taste of the fun! The costumes alone are a sight to see! Be here from July 21st to 24th to check out this awesome summer event in San Diego.

And of course, you can always depend on the standard and fabulous San Diego staples. The San Diego Zoo, Sea World, the many museums in Balboa Park are only a few summer experiences you ought to explore. Our  pristine San Diego beaches offer many days of sunshine and play, and our nightlife gives you ample opportunity to take in the city and let loose.
