Fun Filled Holiday Events in San Diego!

Good morning fellow fans of the holidays!

One of my favourite times of the year is here. I am a total Holiday Dork. Christmas lights, music, parks filled with little tents full of knick knacks and treats – they all just make my heart warm and grow three times the size!

If you’re anything like me (or if you aren’t but are looking to make someone who is like me just joyously happy!) you spend a little time exploring what is going on in your neighbourhood. From parades to shows, from runs to winter wonderlands, San Diego is chock full of events to help you and your family feel the Holiday Love this season! Here are just a few of my favourites…

Mission Bay Festival of Lights

On Sunday, December 13th and Sunday, December 20th, San Diego Bay will be continuing it’s time honoured tradition as a parade of more than 80 gloriously decorated boats drift from Shelter Island past Harbor Island, the Embarcadero, Seaport  Village, and Ferry Landing in Coronado. This year’s theme is Christmas Around the World.

The classic Dr. Seuss Christmas story is sure to have you grinning from ear to ear, and that old heart of yours growing to 3 times it’s size in moments, no matter how old you are! The Old Globe’s production is sure to be a holiday success and they describe their production perfectly: “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a wonderful, whimsical musical based upon the classic Dr. Seuss book. Back for its 18th incredible year, the family favorite features the songs “This Time of Year,” “Santa for a Day” and “Fah Who Doraze,” the delightful carol from the popular animated version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Celebrate the holidays as the Old Globe Theatre is once again transformed into the snow-covered Whoville, right down to the last can of Who-hash.” How the Grinch Stole Christmas runs until December 26th.

If you have ever sat dreaming about an opportunity to go to America’s Largest Balloon Parade, your dream can become a reality on December 30th right here in San Diego! The San Diego Holiday Bowl Parade is an epic event in downtown San Diego that brings the bayside streets to life with magnificent marching bands, gorgeous floats, drill teams and of course a procession of ridiculously large balloons! If you’re really into balloons, you can purchase bandstand tickets for the parade on the day of the event for $20 at the intersection of Harbor Drive and Ash Street.

If you want to trot your fuzzy friend through the Gaslamp Quarter in jingle bells and a furry Christmas collar, for $15 in advance or $20 on the day of the parade you and your pet can be a part of this adorable parade! Dress them in a winning frock and you may win one of a number of prizes. You can also be an observer and check out the ultimate cuteness that is the Pet Parade along 4th and 5th avenues between E and K streets from 3-3:45pm on December 13th.

The beautiful and historic Hotel Del Coronado has a number of holiday happenings throughout the month of December. On December 13th and 20th, Hotel Del opens up the Crown Room during their Sunday brunch and welcomes Santa to join in the festivities! Take a special moment to bring your little ones to meet Jolly Old Saint Nick while you take in the magic of the holidays at the Hotel Del Coronado.

Throw on the famous run’s Sunny Santa Suit and break in your sneakers for this event! An annual holiday tradition in Pacific Beach, the Santa Run brings participants together in Santa gear or their most fabulous (or ugliest!) holiday get up! Consisting of a series of runs as well as a competitive wave, all of the proceeds go toward creating the Pacific Beach Holiday parade – which you can stick around to watch after your run!

The San Diego Repertory Theatre is once again putting on a holiday show for the season! Charles Dickens’ classic story, A Christmas Carol, comes to life on stage. Running from December 11th through the 20th, don’t miss this beautiful story!

If you’re a fan of Christmas and a fan of baseball, this is your dream! Meandre the grounds of Petco Park as it is transformed into a Winter Wonderland. With stunning lighting displays, a visit from Santa, a chance to ride the Polar Express and so much more.

Wherever this holiday season takes you, we hope it is full of magic and memories. We will be sending you all of our love from Sunny San Diego!
